How to get to Raven Rock

Raven Rock is the only town on Solstheim and needs the Dragonborn expansion. It sits on the island's southwest coast, and the only way there is the Northern Maiden, a ship docked at the Windhelm harbour. The captain, Gjalund Salt-Sage, charges 250 gold for the crossing. The Dragonborn quest starts after you finish The Way of the Voice and enter any town: Miraak's cultists attack you, and a note on their bodies points you to Gjalund. During that quest you can persuade or intimidate him into a free trip.

You land on the long pier and Second Councilor Adril Arano meets you as an outlander. From the dock the road climbs to the market square, with the Bulwark, the big ash wall on the east side, protecting the town from Red Mountain. See the full Solstheim map.

Shops, services and who runs Raven Rock

Raven Rock belongs to House Redoran. First Councilor Lleril Morvayn rules from Morvayn Manor, Adril Arano is his second, and Captain Veleth leads the Redoran Guard from the Bulwark.

• The Retching Netch: the inn, run by Geldis Sadri. A room costs 10 gold and it is where most of the town's evening gossip happens.
• Glover Mallory: the blacksmith, brother of Delvin Mallory of the Thieves Guild.
• Fethis Alor: general goods stall in the market, also buys East Empire pendants.
• Milore Ienth: alchemy stall and expert Alchemy trainer.
• The Temple: Elder Othreloth and the Reclamations priests, with a shrine and the Ulen and Morvayn ancestral tombs behind it.
• Raven Rock Mine: the closed ebony mine on the west edge of town.
• Severin Manor: the large house you can earn as a player home.

Quests that start in Raven Rock

• Dragonborn: on arrival you find townsfolk working in a trance at the Earth Stone. Neloth sends you to the Temple of Miraak in the centre of the island.
• March of the Dead: Captain Veleth asks you to stop the ash spawn attacks at Fort Frostmoth.
• The Final Descent: Crescius Caerellius wants proof of what happened to his ancestor Gratian in the mine. The mine leads into Bloodskal Barrow, where you find the Bloodskal Blade, the dragon priest Zahkriisos and his mask, the Black Book The Winds of Change and a word of Dragon Aspect. Finishing it reopens the mine.
• Served Cold: after the two quests above, Adril Arano asks you to uncover a plot against Councilor Morvayn. It ends at Ashfallow Citadel, and the reward is Severin Manor plus leveled gold.
• A New Debt: settle Drovas Relvi's debt with the loan shark Mogrul.
• Recipe for Distraction: find Emberbrand Wine for Captain Veleth.
• Paid in Full: recover Glover Mallory's stolen bonemold formula.

Severin Manor and settling in Raven Rock

Severin Manor is one of the few player homes you never have to pay for. It comes fully furnished after Served Cold, with crafting stations, plenty of storage and the Raven Rock Owner achievement. Because you earn it rather than buy it, there is no housecarl and no decorating menu, but it is a good base for the rest of the island.

Once the mine reopens and the councilor is safe, the town visibly recovers: new stock in the shops and happier dialogue from the Dunmer. If you collect the East Empire pendants across Solstheim, sell them to Fethis Alor, and look for the Black Books that Miraak's story revolves around.
